Glass and Light
Since glass is reflective and transparent, surprising things happen when light is combined with the carved glass. Shadows appear in
places you wouldn’t expect them. If your source of light is natural, then the etched glass changes with the seasons depending on the angle and location of the sun, or moon. A small piece can cast long
shadows across the room. Using artificial light, you can backlight or edge light a piece. If a piece is backlit, then the best place to view it is on the side opposite the light. For example, if you have an exterior
door and you want your guests to see it upon entering, turn on a light inside the house. A direct light from overhead is very effective. If you aren’t expecting company and you want to enjoy the piece from
the inside of your house, turn a light on outside. If a piece is edge lit then the piece is very visible on both sides equally.
Lori’s favorite application for carved glass is in a place that gets lots of sunlight sometime during the day. The piece
will be subtle during the time of day when the sun is not directly on it, but it will become brilliant when the light illuminates it directly.
